Women in STEM

'Betiyan' - A Mentorship Program

The Centre for Civil Society’s ‘Bridging the Gap: Women in STEM’ initiative was launched to address sociocultural barriers and gender stereotypes that limit women’s participation in STEM. The initiative enables the participation of women in STEM education and careers—through policy dialogues, research, outreach, financial aid and mentorship. By engaging with stakeholders from diverse sectors, we hope to challenge stereotypes, promote positive role models, and build a more inclusive and supportive ecosystem for women in STEM.

Initiatives

Aid and Mentorship

In partnership with Procter & Gamble India, under its CSR initiative ‘Shiksha’, we provide financial and mentorship support to meritorious girls from under-resourced backgrounds to pursue STEM courses.

Analysis

Through our research we provide valuable insights and policy recommendations on the issue of the gender gap in STEM to enable better policies, a shift in discourse as well as an improvement in the status of women in STEM across South Asia.

Dialogues and Events

We organize round table discussions and policy dialogues to bring together stakeholders from government, academia, corporates and civil society to create a discourse on women in STEM and pool best practices and recommendations to be considered

Outreach

We leverage social media to disseminate information and key statistics as well as highlight inspiring stories of women STEM. We also have a girl child mascot named Vidya who often appears in these social media posts under the #VigyaanWithVidya

PRISM: Science & Technology Policy Dialogue Series

Our policy dialogue series titled ‘PRISM’ depicts the power of collective intelligence by bringing together views from diverse stakeholder groups, both within and beyond the S&T ecosystem. In addition to anticipating contemporary developmental challenges, this dialogue hopes to provide fresh insights on science and technology policy concerns.

Science & Technology Policy Environment for India @ 100

Given that India is celebrating her 75 years of independence (Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav), a dialogue on India’s strategy for the next 25 years with regard to its science & technology environment is imperative to pre-empt challenges and capitalize on opportunities that lay ahead. In addition to anticipating contemporary developmental challenges, this dialogue provided fresh insight on S&T priorities, policy decisions and discussed the likely roadmap for the next 25 years of India’s S&T environment.

Open Access in South Asia

The second PRISM event was organised on the theme of ‘Open Access in South Asia’ on 26 March 2022. The event garnered interest from individuals internationally, witnessing registrations from 10 countries namely, India, Bangladesh, USA, Singapore, Scotland, China, Pakistan, Nepal, Afghanistan and Vietnam.

The first PRISM discussion, titled ‘The Future of Research Funding for Indian Universities,’ was held on 16 January 2022 at the virtual India Science Festival. It succeeded in bringing representatives from various sectors to a common platform to explore the current status, challenges and future directions of Indian universities’ research funding scenario.
